History of Mother’s Day

In this world, there are many traditional ceremonies, which have lasted thousands of years, to honor mothers and motherhood. The mother of Jesus, the Mother Nature, the mother god Rhea, the Roman festival of Hilaria, or the Christian Laetare Sunday celebration (related to the image of Mother Church) are typical examples.

Mother’s Day was recognized as an official holiday in the early 20th century. Its story began in 1905 after Anna Reeves Jarvis’s mother died. Anna was a peace activist. She wanted to honor her mother and all mothers in this world because she believed a mother is “the person who has done more for you than anyone in the world”.

Besides, Mother’s Day was once dedicated to peace. Before recognized, one of the main purposes of this holiday was to call upon mothers of all nationalities to band together and promote the “amicable settlement of international questions, the great and general interests of peace”.

All states in the U.S observed Mother’s Day as a local holiday in 1911. In 1914, Woodrow Wilson signed a proclamation designating Mother’s Day as a national holiday to honor mothers. Since then, Mother’s Day is observed in the United States on the second Sunday in May. The next Mother’s Day will be on Sunday, May 9, 2021.

Now, as a complement to Mother’s Day, we also have many celebrations for other family members such as Father’s Day, Siblings Day, and Grandparents’ Day.
